First House in Punta Gorda |
Description |
Note on back of photo "Marian McAdow was a painter, among other skills, and she painted this picture of the house that was on the land Isaac Trabue bought from James M. Lanier to start the town of Trabue. The hourse is believed o have been built by a squatter named Lockhart. It was on this site that Perry W. McAdow built a palatial home for his bride, Marian. Here she developed a beautiful botanical garden. Before leaving Punta Gorda, Mrs. McAdow gave the painting to her friend, telegrapher Willie A. White. About 1958, Mrs. White told me about the painting and let me take a picture of it. After Mrs. White died, her daughter, Thelma, left it in the house when she sold the estate. A family named Runkle purchased the house and I alerted their daughter-in-law,Terry, to be on the lookout for the painting. Terry found it stored in the garage, showing signs of neglect. She rescued it, cleaned it up and had it framed. It now occupies a place of honor in her home." - U.S. Cleveland |
