Johnson was a charter member of the Punta Gorda Rotary and also a Mason. He led the effort to create Charlotte County in 1921 and became one of the first commissioners of the county. He continued to live in Punta Gorda with his wife Bertha with whom he had 10 children, several who died in infancy. He died in 1953 and was buried at Indian Springs Cemetery.
